  • Great Lens

This is a fantastic lens for the money. From 70-200 it is very sharp and although I get a little CA out towards 300mm it is still very good quality and nothing that a little editing can't correct. The VR works brilliantly and has allowed me to take photos that I wouldn't be able to get if I went with a shorter lens. I use this on a cropped sensor body and have used this a lot in nature hikes and portraits. I won't get rid of this lens even if I get a 2.8 lens in this range because the 70-300 vr is a joy to use and hike with. Much lighter than a 70-200 and more range. It focuses fast and instant manual override is a treat. I also use it for closeups of flowers on occasion and although it isn't a macro lens it is still pretty good at 1:6 ratio. If you are think of getting the lesser versions of this lens I can tell you just get this one as it will also work on a full frame body later on.

  • Great Buy

Cant really complain about this lens, especially considering the price. If your shooting outdoors and you have lots of light, you cant really go wrong with this lens. If your shooting indoor sports or during low light, (dawn or dusk) you might want to consider investing in the considerably more expensive 70-200mm f/2.8. If you can afford that lens its great, if not you'll still be happy with this one, plus its got an extra 100mm on the 70-200mm. Ive been using it for years now and its got me some pretty sweet shots, Just make sure you dont cheap out a filter if you plan on keeping one on all the time. After removing my cheap UV filter ive noticed a significant increase in image contrast and colour vibrancy. Overall a great lens and well worth 5 stars

  • Best telephoto in the price range

I tried a couple similarly priced 70-300mm lenses before I decided to buy this one. Its sharp from 70-200. Its a little soft at at 300mm but definitely still usable. I usually didn't zoom past 200 and just cropped it to where 300mm would have been. Focuses really quickly and the VR works well too. Overall there is no other lens in this price range that comes clos to this one. I got some great candid portraits and birds in flight photos with this lens, I never used to shoot much telephoto stuff before I got this lens but I found it was attached to my camera quite a bit. Just don't confuse it with the cheaper non-VR version which isn't nearly as good.

  • Fantastic Zoom Lens

I bought this lens with a package of the Nikon D90 with 18-55mm lens. I wanted this zoom ratio, as it was the same that I had on my old Olympus setup so I was used to the zoom. Have to say that this beats out the olympus in build quality and crispness of shots, a great lens to have in your camera bag at all times. Autofocus is quick and quiet, and the VR is great when taking shots and holding the camera. If you are going to take shots on a tripod, turn this feature off, as it will take longer to focus.

  • Awesome!

Absolutely a great lens! This was the first lens I purchased, other than the kit lens that comes with the camera. It is very sharp and has a great focal range. I agree with other reviewers that the sharpness does fall off closer to the 300mm but still a great value lens. I have used this for a number of portrait shoots and the quality has been great.

  • Excellent Value

From 70-230mm this lens is terrific. Sharpness drops off a little at the far end of the zoom, but is still quite acceptable. The VR works beautifully, and this is fairly compact and light weight compared to the much more expensive alternatives. I'm very happy with this lens.

  • Good Prosumer level optic

For the price you pay this is a great lens, Its a little dark (slow) if you're used to fast professional glass but even then I was struck the the range of this lens and its ability to reach out and touch someone... Frame filling portraits with reasonable background bokeh from across the room are as simple as aim and shoot
