I was looking for a birding lens and I tried several (I won't name) of the more popular ones. They all disappointed as they were no sharper than the Nikon 70 - 300 that I wanted to replace - but Henry's honored their return policy with no questions asked. Then I tried this lens and my heart pounded when I saw the first images. They were so sharp that I could crop the tiny warblers to the extreme and still maintain the tiniest feather detail. The bokeh was gorgeous and the colours seemed to just leap out and grab. This lens is light enough that I can hike with it comfortably and most of my shots are hand held. When the light is really low, I use a monopod. I love this lens so much that I made a post on my blog http://ian-dickinson.blogspot.com/2011/04/i-am-finally-content.html

If you need to get in close and don't have a lot of cash, this may be the lens for you. I have been using this lens for about a year now an it is almost always on my camera while shooting nature. The lens is light weight in comparison to it's 2.8 counterpart and at $1400 compared to $6100 it is considerably less expensive. I can shoot with it on a D3s hand held no problem. The images it takes are tack sharp and if you can live with a maximum aperture of f4, your gonna love this lens. The only downside I have found is that it has no rear element and is a good hiding place for dust which could eventually get onto your sensor. If you take care of your equipment this shouldn't be an issue. If you need to get more distance, a 1.4 TC works on this lens quite well but in my experience, you will need a tripod. Happy shooting, Mark - Ottawa
