  • The Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS II USM

  • July 29, 2011
  • By: Christopher

Earlier this year I rented the Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS II USM lens to do a shoot at a wildlife refuge north of Toronto. I first compared it to my experience with the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and the previous Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS USM. The new lens is larger, heavier and more expensive than any other 70-200 available for Canon, is it worth it? If you are after outright performance the short answer is an emphatic yes! The majority of the shooting I did was at f3.5 or less, most often f2.8. I found the lens to be quite sharp wide open. At smaller apertures sharpness, of course, increased. F8 to f11 produced results near as makes no difference to top quality primes when stopped down. Focus is incredibly fast and accurate. In tandem with my 7D I was never waiting for the camera or the lens to do what I needed it to as the situation or light changed. The performance of this lens increased my “keeper rate” considerably over any other lens I've used. It allowed me to have so many great shots that the hardest part was choosing the best of the best, there was very little weeding out images where the focus was missed. The IS is absolutely phenomenal. It will keep your image steady long after your subject has moved. In low light I was able to shoot a still object at 200mm on a crop body (the 7D) at 1/40th of a second and the photo was completely sharp at a 100% crop. That equates to roughly 4 stops! The build quality of the lens is flawless and just holding it you get the sense that this is an immensely durable product. The full time manual focus ring moves smoothly with the perfect amount of resistance as does the zoom ring. The buttons to switch between focus modes and IS modes click into place with an appropriate amount of pressure that would make them difficult to move accidentally yet easy to move purposefully. The Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS II USM performed flawlessly for me on my Canon EOS 7D. For the performance it achieves it is worth it's weight in gold.

  • Best tele zoom I have owned

When I moved to digital I went with the prime 200 2.8L and then upgraded to the first edition of this lens which I used for years until it was stolen earlier this year. I replaced it with this version, the latest at time of writing. I find the II lens to be sharper at the edges and have better contrast than even its excellent predecessor. It's also better than the I lens when used with Canon's 2x converter. For birds, feather detail is excellent and DOF is consistent edge to edge as one would expect from L glass. Expensive, but highly recommended.

  • Canon 70-200 2.8L IS USM II lens

I've recently purchased the latest Canon 70-200 2.8L IS USM II lens from Henry's in Orleans, and simply love it. I've looked at all Canon 70-200 options and other manufacturers', I end up getting this one. I love to shoot hockey, which limit me to f/2.8 for the aperture due to poor lighting conditions, and as I like to shoot hand held from the penalty box, IS was a must. After a few weeks with the lens, and hundreds of shots, I can honestly say I can see the improvement from the 1st version of this lens, it is sharper, and focus more rapidly, I'm not certain the AF speed increase is due to the glass or IS upgrade, but it is noticable. I'm really glad I went all the way ! It's worth the money, top of the line product quality built and performance.

  • Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS II Lens review

  • March 21, 2011

The first review shown here can be ignored since this lens has only been out for 1 year so is bogus.... Anyway I have had this lens for a couple of weeks and has taken the place of a couple of very good primes I had as well as the non-IS version of this same lens. Image quality is the best and build quality superb. Very sharp images with beautiful background blur. IS works better then any lens I have ever had and that includes the Canon 100mm f2.8 L macro. Price is high on this lens but if you are looking for amazing quality/performance then it is worth the cost.
