CANON EF 70-200 F4 L IS ZOOM LENS

The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a lightweight, compact L Series telephoto zoom lens with Image Stabilizer. The optical Image Stabilization in the new EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens provides up to an incredible four stops of shake correction-a first for Canon IS lenses. The use of fluorite UD lens elements provides excellent optical performance in terms of resolution and contrast. These features, together with its water-and dust-proof construction, provide both the performance and portability to meet user demands.

  • Why I chose this lens

When I was looking to buy a 70-200 I had a few options. The non-is was automatically out as I borrowed a lens once that was non IS to go and take photos of the Queen and I literally have one photo that wasn't shaky. Next was brand, did I go the canon or one of the third party lenses? I found out that if I was to upgrade to a full frame sensor camera- which I hope to be doing, then only the canon would work. Third thing that made me make up my mind was the F number, while I would enjoy the extra stop of light, was it worth the extra $1000? After reading a few reviews and seeing that most people found that the F4 was serving them well for weddings and models- what I will be using it for, plus it was about half the weight of the F2.8 I thought this was a clear winner. My local Henrys had it in stock (when from rumors the stock levels after the Japan disaster were causing some problems) and at a great price!

Optically speaking this lens is second to none! However even while it is claimed to be of professional quality I have to disagree: It seems that the mechanical parts are not better than any cheap consumer grade lens. I happened to bang this lens against the railing on a ship while turning around. This resulted in a retaining ring inside the lens to break. As a result the lens became totally useless, which was rather annoying since it happened on a holiday trip. My recommendation: if you buy or own this lens be VERY careful, or a useless piece of glass followed by an appr. %3oo repair bill will be the result. Canon's reaction: the warranty is over, too bad.
