Outstanding Lens

This medium telephoto prime from Canon has quickly become a personal favourite.
The build quality is superb, and while a rather heavy piece of equipment it feels very balanced on the camera. The fact that it is not too long likely helps with this.
The available 1.2 aperture allows extremely shallow DOF with a lovely, dreamy bokeh. A pleasant surprise to me is that the lens is very sharp even wide open.
Auto focus is relatively slow ( there is a LOT of glass to be moved ), and so this would not be very suitable for attempts to photograph subjects moving rapidly, especially with unpredictable changes in direction.
If one chooses to manual focus, the large amount of light in the viewfinder is very helpful, and the focus ring is finely calibrated, allowing very detailed adjustments.
It would be fair to describe this as an ideal "portrait" lens. It is outstanding stopped down , but in my opinion is made to be used at large apertures. If that style of shooting is your cup of tea, and if you can justify the hefty price, it is well worth considering.
