Primary use: Birding and wildlife Camera body: Canon 7D Pros: Great clarity of glass, relatively light (for a 400mm), sharp wide open at f/5.6, built in hood is so convenient (don't overlook this advantage), quality build, and price. Cons: No image stabilization (IS) - This would negate the price and weight pros from above. Large max aperture of f/5.6, so not as good in low light as its much more expensive alternatives - This would also negate the price pro from above. Minimum focusing distance is greater than that of the 100-400mm by about double. I just step back a few more feet to compensate for this. Not usually an issue. Summary I bought this lens because it fell into my price range for the type of shooting I wanted to do with it. Its L series quality is is evident when you hold it. Solid. This lens is a prime, sharp even wide open at f/5.6. Many people choose between this and the Canon 100-400mm zoom. My main reason for this lens is birding. I always used my 100-300mm at 300mm and it was hardly enough. I knew I was going to shoot at 400mm 90% of the time. This is a great length. I highly recommend this lens. It preforms very well in good light. I've used it in winter and summer with great results. I purchased this lens knowing that I would need to compensate for the lack of IS and max aperture of f/5.6. This lens is a tool and only as good as the photographer using it. You can overcome any drawbacks with better shooting skills.
