The 17-40mm L is an amazing piece of glass. I use this lens on my 7D so I don't get the full capability of its width on the cropped sensor, which one would on full frame. But even mounted on a crop, it still gives a very wide field of view. The build quality of this lens is exactly what you'd expect of an L series. It feels strong, and has a good weight to it. There isn't any play in the rings, and it has a metal mount. And of course, it has that nice red ring. This lens produce fantastic image quality. With a max aperture of f/4.0, you aren't going to get shallow DOF but that isn't really the purpose of this lens anyway. Between f/8 and f/11 is where is lens shines with amazing sharpness, edge to edge. An indication of what this lens is intended for; landscape photography. I can't say enough about how good this lens is. A lens with this level of quality, and the L moniker at such a good price; you can't go wrong. If you enjoy landscape photography this lens will not disappoint.

I would disagree with Josh. You can't compare 17-40mm lens to 14-24mm lens and rate them. You are comparing apples and oranges. 17-40mm L is a great glass for its value.

Affordable L-series wide-angle zoom lens. I use it on my 40D and I am very happy with results.

Pros: • Cheapest L series lens on the market • Reasonably fast (F4) • Sharpest of Canon's Ultrawide Angle lenses (Q3, 2011) • 77mm Diameter • Distance/Focus gauge • Excellent Build Quality • Excellent Image Quality Cons • Not quite as wide as Nikons flagship 14-24mm • Lose one stop of light vs the 16-35mm • Corners are poor quality @ 17mm on Full Frame • Aberration needs heavy correction. Overall this is a fantastic lens, and if you don't find yourself needing a wide angle full time, but still want that focal range, this one for sure. It is SHARPER than the 16-35, however if you are using a wide angle often, look into a F to EF adapter and get the Nikon 14-24. Best wide angle on the market.
