  • Highly Satisfactory Source of Eye-popping Shots

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm was one of the first lenses I bought with my 40D, knowing that all of my really exciting images come from very wide or very long lenses. It did not disappoint. It is compact enough to fit unobtrusively in the corner of my bags, and is surprisingly well-constructed. After two years of intensive use, the focus and zoom rings are still tight and move smoothly. A lens of this range stretches the limits of optical technology, but only at extreme wide angle is there much barrel in the images (if the lens is aligned with the horizon), and I can find softness of detail only at the extreme edges when shooting wide open; altogether very satisfactory optical peformance! I have not bothered to acquire the lens hood, so some images drop a touch in contrast in bright light (easily correctable with Photoshop of similar). I have never experienced flare with the 10-22. Given that it has few rivals compatible with the Canon mount, it is a good thing that Canon clearly put a serious effort into this lens. Critics have pointed out that, given its almost $1000 price tag, it is a pity it only works on 1.6x conversion factor APS-C cameras like my 40D. If I move up to a larger sensor body, it will have to stay behind. True enough, but the huge number of eye-popping shots I have made with it are priceless!
