  • Wonderful inexpensive lens

I absolutely love using this lens - it works very well under low light and gives me the beautiful bokeh that I want with portraits. Light and perfect to take along for any occasion.

  • one of those must-haves, ya know?

It's noisy, and it has cheap-looking shiny plastic. It's a bit flimsy, doesn't have the internal SWM, doesn't have VR, doesn't have zoom capabilities, doesn't have "M/A" --- who cares. I toss it around as if it were putty (well, not really, but you get the picture). You buy this lens for its creative potential -- it really brings out the SLR qualities and characteristics you may be aiming for. I use it a lot for abstract type shots, but I heard it makes a great portrait lens. It's sharp, it's fast, it's compact, it's light, it's affordable -- the 50-mil is one of those must-haves.

I don't know why more camera's aren't sold stock with this lens. This is gear 101, a must have beginner or advanced. If you feel like splurging go for the quicker f1.4 model, but overall I have never been let down by this lens. The quality of the construction alone is superb.

I've wanted one of these lenses for the longest time and finally ordered one, and it is better then I imagined. I just love the look of every photo I've taken with it.

  • Dont let the Price or Weight Fool you, this lens holds its own!

I purchased this Portrait lens from your Church St location in Toronto, Ont as a birthday gift to myself. Upon opening the box, the lens sure doesnt feel like much (with its compact size and plastic housing, it is extremely lightweight compared to a stock 18-55 lens) But I am extremely impressed by the speed of the lens and the image quality. The lens does autofocus with my D90 thanks to the focusing motor located inside the camera. Super crisp images and the portraits turn out amazing! This lens is probably the best bag for the buck over other more expensive portrait lenses!

  • Simply Beautiful

This is a beautiful piece of glass. Its fast and versitiile and the price is amazing. As an older AF lens there is not VR or focus motors on it, so make sure its compatible with your camera unless you don't mind manually focusing.

This is an awesome lens to have in your kit. Great price and great quality. I also use this lens reverse mounted on the end of my macro lens to increase magnification. A no-brainer if your camera has a autofocus screw drive or if you don't mind manual focusing!

  • Unbeatable for the price

I picked this lens up after owning the Nikon 35mm f1.8 for a few months - I wanted this lens to help with portraits. Its very robust feeling, and quite sharp, although the focus isn't quite as precise as the AF-S motors in the 35mm lens (I am using the in-body motors of my D90). For the price, its easy to add this to your roster of lenses and its great for taking portraits of kids/animals without getting so close to them as to disturb or distract them.

  • Must have for every photographer

This is just a light and fun lens to use. It gives more creative control with great depth of field control with f1.8. Great portrait lens on a cropped sensor camera and a great normal lens on a full frame sensor. It is a very sharp lens and allows you to shoot in lower lighting conditions. THe view finder is also nice and bright with this lens on. The build quality is a also very good. It is the older focus system and it this is the only area I see a weakness in. It still focuses pretty fast but you have to switch it from auto to manual unlike the newer lenses. Regardless I use this lens frequently and for many uses. I find it is also handy to have a prime lens when you are feeling creative because it forces you to "zoom with your feet" and I always end up with interesting images I may not have captured if I had my zoom lens on. It is a great addition to the bag.

  • Great lens that everyone should have in their kit

The 50mm 1.8 lens is a treat to put on your DSLR and take some great photos with a prime. Very sharp, and really not much of a compromise from the pro-level f1.4 50mm. An excellent value.

  • Great DX portrait lens, if a touch outdated

  • October 30, 2011
  • By: Matthew

The good: Optically excellent in all respects. Makes a nice close portrait lens on DX. Build quality is decent, although not up to the standards of Canon's L or Nikon's older manual versions. The bad: Focus gearing is a bit on the slow side for such a small lens (~4 turns for macro to infinity). Nikon Canada's MSRP might be a bit high for a simple, older, non-SWM design of this build quality.

  • Great Lens for the Price

Bought this lens a month or so after I bought my D90. With the autofocus motor that is in the D90 is allowed me to buy the AF D lens and have autofocus, which would not be available with the D3100 or D5100. Great lens for portraits, and landscapes, haven't had time to travel much, waiting for the Autumn colours to get some nice shots.
