I bought this lens last year and it stays on my camera 80% of the time because it is light, small, sharp and fast. I love using this lens for portraits, especially when I am working in natural lighting because at f/1.4 I can take beautiful photos in low light. I recommend this lens for beginner photographers because the great depth of field and bokeh it produces. I use this on a Canon 5D Mark II and when traveling, the lens is small enough to stay on my camera and I can pop both the lens and camera into my purse. It is very light, which also makes it a great lens to travel with. The image quality and colour and contrast that this lens produces is just beautiful. For the relatively affordable price, you cannot go wrong.

After reading several lens reviews I bought this lens as well as the 85mm USM from canon, to use on my T3i. I am definitely happy to have spent the money on this f1.4 lens over canon's f1.8. Build quality is excellent, the focus ring requires a full turn to get to infinity which is nice - very quiet lens with auto focus on. This lens makes for a great portrait lens - keeping in mind that the crop factor of 1.6 makes it closer to an 85mm equivalent. Very nice low light performance, with lovely shallow depth of field - though it can have somewhat soft focus under the right circumstances. Overall a definite must have for canon users not willing to spend on the 50mm 1.2.
Well, I purchased my first DSLR about 5 months ago and finally bought my first "Good" lens about. The staff at the Vaughan store were very helpful and did not pressure me into buying the best. They listened to me and provided several options. I compared several 50MM lenses however came to a decision on the Canon EF 50MM/1.4 USM. Simply holding it in your hands you can feel the difference in housing and assembly. I suggest this lens if looking for a good portrait lens. It worth the extra money then the 50MM/1.8.
